1 Anwendungsbereich und Zweck 1 Scope and purpose

Dieser Group Standard beschreibt eine standardisierte und
objektive Bestimmung des Geruchsverhaltens von Bauteilen,
Halbzeugen und Werkstoffen des KFZ-Innenraums in einer
Emissionsprüfkammer.
Das Verfahren kann auch zur Bestimmung der Geruchsver-
haltens des gesamten Fahrzeuginnenraumes angewendet
werden.
Die Geruchsbewertung orientiert sich dabei an der Noten-
skala der VDA 270.
This Group Standard describes a standardized and objective
process to analyse and determine the olfactory behavior of
components, semi-finished products and materials fitted in
the interior of motorcars, performed in an emission test
chamber.
The process may also be used for the analysis of the olfactory
behavior of the overall vehicle interior.
The olfactory analysis is based on the scale of grades
specified in VDA 270.

3 Definitionen
Im Rahmen dieser Norm werden folgende Definitionen fest-
gelegt:
Abluftrohr:
Vorgegebene Öffnung für die aus der Prüfkammer austre-
tende Luft.
Abluftstrom:
Das den Prüfraum über das Abluftrohr verlassende Luftvolu-
men je Zeiteinheit.
Beladung:
Das Verhältnis von Volumen, Fläche, Länge oder Masse des
Bauteils zum Prüfraumvolumen.
Emissionen:
Unter den vorliegenden Prüfbedingungen aus dem Bauteil/
Halbzeug austretende organische Substanzen.
Luftwechselrate:
Quotient aus Zuluftstrom und Prüfraumvolumen als Maß für
den Luftaustausch je Zeiteinheit.
Probeluft:
Mit Emissionen angereicherte Luft aus dem Prüfraum.
Probenahmebeutel (Nalophanbeutel):1)
Nalophanbeutel (Volumen ca. 8 Liter) zum Sammeln der Pro-
beluft, um sie danach in der Geruchsbewertung darzubieten.
Probenahmeverteilerbaum:
Im Abluftrohr platzierter, beheizbarer Edelstahlblock mit meh-
reren Abgängen, an denen Luftproben aus dem Prüfraum mit
Probenahmepumpen entnommen werden können.
Prüfraum:
Luftdicht abschließbarer Raum zur Bestimmung flüchtiger
organischer Emissionen unter definierten klimatischen
Bedingungen.
PureSniff:2)
Gerät zur gleichmäßigen und reproduzierbaren Darbietung
von Probeluft zur Geruchsbewertung im Vergleich zu Refe-
renzluft.
Referenzluft:
Geruchsneutrale Luft, idealerweise entnommen aus der Prüf-
kammerzuluftleitung (vor Befeuchtung).
Zuluftstrom:
Das in den Prüfraum geleitete Luftvolumen je Zeiteinheit.

3 Definitions
The following definitions are established within the framework
of this standard:
Exhaust pipe:
Aperture designed as exhaust vent for air emitted from the test
chamber.
Exhaust flow:
The volume per time unit of air exiting the test room via the
exhaust pipe.
Loading:
The ratio of volume, surface, length or mass of the component
to the test room volume.
Emissions:
Organic substances escaping from the component/
semi-finished product under the existing testing conditions.
Air exchange rate:
Quotient of supply air flow and test chamber volume as
measure for air exchange per unit of time.
Sample air:
Air from the test chamber enriched with emissions.
Sample taking bag (Nalophan bag):1)
Nalophan bag (volume approximately 8 liters) for the
collection of the sample air and submission to the olfactory
analysis.
Sampling distribution tree:
Heated high-quality steel block with multiple outlets placed in
the exhaust pipe on which air samples can be taken from the
test chamber by means of sampling pumps.
Test chamber:
Air tight room for determining volatile organic emissions under
defined climatic conditions.
PureSniff:2)
Device designed for the consistent and reproducible
submission of sample air for olfactory analysis compared to
reference air.
Reference air:
Odor-neutral air, in the ideal case taken from the test chamber
supply air line (prior to moistening).
Supply air flow:
The volume per unit of time of air fed into the test room.

4 Ablauf der Prüfung
4.1 Probennahme
Der Geruchsprüfung geht die Probenkonditionierung nach
GS 97014--3 voraus.
Die Geruchsprobenahme aus der Kammer erfolgt 4 Stunden
nach Einbringen des Prüflings in die Kammer. Dazu wird ein
neuer unbenutzter Probenahmebeutel (Nalophanbeutel mit
einem Volumen von ca. 8 Liter) über ein Adapterstück an
einen Ausgang des Probenahmeverteilerbaums angeschlos-
sen. Die restlichen Ausgänge des Verteilerbaumes werden
mit Blindstopfen verschlossen. Nun wird das Abluftrohr mit
einem Pfropfen/Korken oder idealerweise mit einem Kugel-
hahn verschlossen, wodurch der Probenahmebeutel mit
Kammerluft befüllt wird.
Zur Probenahme wird der Probenahmebeutel mit 75 %
geruchsneutraler Referenzluft vorbefüllt und die restlichen
25 % Kammerluft hinzugegeben (Verdünnung 1+3).

4 Test procedure
4.1 Sample taking
Prior to the olfactory test the samples must have been
conditioned according to GS 97014--3.
Olfactory samples are to be taken from the chamber 4 hours
after the specimen has been placed in the chamber. For that
purpose a new and unused sample taking bag (Nalophan bag
with volume of approx. 8 liters) is connected via an adapter
piece to one outlet of the sampling distribution tree. The
remaining outlets of the distribution tree must be closed with
dummy plugs. Now, the exhaust pipe is closed with a plug/
cork or, in the ideal case, by means of a ball valve, thus filling
the sample taking bag with air from the chamber.
For sample taking, the bag is pre-filled with 75 % odor-neutral
reference air, then the remaining 25 % chamber air is added
(dilution 1+3).

4.2 Prüfer
Für eine qualifizierte Bewertung sind mindestens 3 Prüfer
erforderlich. Alle Prüfer müssen einschlägige Erfahrung mit
der Geruchsbeurteilung im Automobilbereich haben.
Vor und während der Bewertung gelten für die Prüfer einige
Verhaltensregeln, die die Reproduzierbarkeit erhöhen und die
gegenseitige Beeinflussung reduzieren sollen:
-- der Prüfer darf eine halbe Stunde vor und während der
Messung nicht rauchen, essen, trinken (Ausnahme Was-
ser), Kaugummi kauen o.ä.;
-- am Messtag ist vor der Bewertung auf Alkohol und stark
gewürzte Speisen (insbesondere Knoblauch) zu verzich-
ten;
-- eine Beeinträchtigung der Riechfähigkeit durch man-
gelnde körperliche Hygiene, aber auch die übermäßige
Verwendung von geruchsaktiven Körperpflegemitteln
(Parfüm, Deo, Rasierwasser, o.ä.), ist zu vermeiden;
-- ist der Prüfer am Messtag z.B. durch Krankheiten in seiner
Riechfähigkeit beeinträchtigt, hat er dies dem Leiter mitzu-
teilen und ist von der Bewertung auszuschließen;
-- während der Bewertung darf kein Austausch von Informa-
tionen der Prüfer untereinander erfolgen.
4.3 Prüfung und Probendarbietung
Die Beurteilung der Geruchsprobe erfolgt spätestens
60 Minuten nach der Probenahme.
Für die Beurteilung ist ein geruchsneutraler Ort zu wählen, der
konstante Temperatur- und Lüftungsbedingungen aufweist
und die Konzentration der Prüfer auf die Geruchsbewertung
auch durch andere Einflüsse, wie z.B. Lärm, nicht beeinträch-
tigt. Die Prüfer sollten sich vor der Prüfung ca. 5 Minuten an
diesem Ort aufhalten.
Die Darbietung der Geruchsprobe erfolgt mittels PureSniff.
Für die Beurteilung einer Geruchsprobe wird der gefüllte Pro-
benbeutel in der rechten Röhre des PureSniffs positioniert. In
die linke Röhre wird ein Beutel mit geruchsneutraler Refe-
renzluft eingebracht. Die Prüfer treten nacheinander an das
Gerät und führen sich durch Betätigen des jeweiligen Druck-
knopf zuerst Neutralluft und anschließend Probenluft zu. Mit
jedem Knopfdruck wird vom PureSniff ein Volumen von
ca. 0,5 Liter gleichmäßig aus dem Beutel gedrückt und dem
Prüfer über den Glastrichter zur Verfügung gestellt. Bei
Bedarf können die Prüfer mehrmals ans Gerät treten, dürfen
aber nur eine Bewertung abgeben.
4.4 Bewertung
Die Geruchsbewertung erfolgt gemäß der in der VDA 270
beschriebenen Skala von 1 bis 6, wobei halbe Zwischen-
schritte möglich sind.

Note 3 deutlich wahrnehmbar, aber noch nicht störend
Note 4 störend
Note 5 stark störend
Note 6 unerträglich
Kommentare zu Luftqualität/Geruchscharakter sind
erwünscht und werden ebenfalls dokumentiert.

4.2 Testing specialists
A qualified evaluation requires at least 3 testing specialists
(“specialists”). All specialists must exhibit expertise and
experience in the field of olfactory analysis in automotive
engineering.
Before and after the evaluation the specialists must folllow
some rules of conduct supposed to increase reproducibility
and reduce mutual influencing:
-- half an hour before performing a test the specialist must not
smoke, eat or drink (exception: water) or chew chewing
gum or the like;
-- the day the measurement is performed, the specialist must
not drink alcohol or eat spicy meals (garlic in particular)
prior to testing;
-- impairment of olfaction by a lack of body hygiene but also
the excessive use of odor-active body care products
(scent, deodorant, aftershave or the like) is to be avoided;
-- if the olfaction of the specialist is impaired by e.g. illness at
the day testing is scheduled he/she must report this to the
supervisor and will be excluded from the test;
-- while testing is in progress no information shall be
exchanged among the specialists.
4.3 Testing and sample submission
The evaluation of the olfactory sample must be carried out, at
the latest, 60 minutes after sample taking.
An odor-neutral location is to be selected for the evaluation
that exhibits constant temperature and ventilation conditions
and does not impair the concentration of the specialists on the
olfactory evaluation by effects like noise or the like. Prior to
testing the specialist should have stayed in that location for
approximately 5 minutes.
Submission of the olfactory sample is by means of PureSniff.
For an evaluation of the olfactory sample the filled sample bag
is positioned in the right pipe of the PureSniff device. In the left
pipe a bag with odor-neutral reference air is inserted. The
specialists approach the device successively and at first sniff
neutral air and then sample air by pressing the respective
buttons. By each press of a button the PureSniff device
steadily releases a volume of approximately 0.5 liters from the
bag and feeds it to the specialist via the glas funnel. If
necessary, the specialists may approach the device several
times, but shall submit only one evaluation however.
4.4 Grading
Olfactory grading is performed according to the scale from 1
to 6 described in VDA 270. Half grades are permitted.
Grade 1 not perceptible
Grade 2 perceptible, not disturbing
Grade 3 clearly perceptible, but not yet disturbing
Grade 4 disturbing
Grade 5 very disturbing
Grade 6 unbearable
Comments on the air quality/olfactive character are welcome
and will also be documented.

5 Auswertung
Das Geruchsverhalten wird als arithmetischer Mittelwert der
Einzelbenotung angegeben, wobei beim Runden des Mittel-
werts in halben Notenschritten abgestuft wird.
BEISPIEL 3,0 + 3,0 + 4,0 = 3,33 = Endergebnis: 3,5
Falls es Kommentare zu Luftqualität bzw. Geruchscharakter
gibt, sind diese im Prüfbericht einzutragen.
6 Prüfbericht
Der Prüfbericht hat folgende Angaben zu enthalten:
-- Name und Adresse des Prüflabors;
-- Name und Adresse des Auftraggebers;
-- eindeutige Bezeichnung(en) zur Identifizierung des
Prüflings / Bauteils;
-- Prüf- und Probenahmebedingungen: Prüfzeitraum, Tem-
peratur;
-- Zeitpunkt, Art und Dauer der Probenahme;
-- Kurzbeschreibung des Analyseverfahrens und der Bewer-
tungskriterien;
-- teilnehmende Prüfer;
-- Darreichungsform (z.B. Beutel), Probenvolumen;
-- Hinweis auf diesen Group Standard;
-- Abweichungen von diesem Group Standard und Beson-
derheiten während der Prüfung;
-- Einzelergebnisse der teilnehmenden Prüfer mit Bemer-
kung zum Geruch;
-- Gesamtergebnis der Geruchsprüfung auf eine Nachkom-
mastelle gerundet;
-- Datum und Unterschrift.
5 Score
The olfactory behavior is presented as arithmetic mean of the
single grades. Rounding of the arithmetic mean is in half
grades.
EXAMPLE 3.0 + 3.0 + 3.0 + 4.0 = 3.33 = final result: 3.5.
Comments on the air quality or olfactive character are to be
entered in the test report.
6 Test report
The test report must contain the following data:
-- name and address of the test lab;
-- name and address of the costumer;
-- unambiguous designation(s) for identification of the test
specimen / component;
-- testing and sampling conditions: testing period,
temperature;
-- time, type and duration of sampling;
-- brief description of the analysis method and of the
evaluation criteria;
-- participating testing specialists;
-- types of submission (e.g. bag), sample volumes;
-- reference to this Group Standard;
-- deviations from this Group Standard and particularities
occurring during the test;
-- individual results of the participating testing specialists
including remarks regarding odor;
-- overall result of olfactory test rounded to one decimal
place;
-- date and signature.
