Das gewöhnliche Mietshaus ist eine Art von Wohn-
kollektiv; es kann nie die gleichen Qualitäten besitzen
wie zum Beispiel das Privathaus, welches in einer
direkteren Beziehung zur Landschaft steht. Immerhin
hat auch das Privathaus, das oft ohne geschützte
Innenhöfe in einen ganz kleinen Garten gestellt ist,
seine negativen Seiten, während andererseits das
Mietshaus manches Positive aufweist. Es sollte daher
versucht werden, die spezifischen Vorteile des Miets-
hauses mit den Vorzügen des Einzelwohnhauses in
idealer Weise zu verbinden.
Im Modell-Mietshaus, an läßlich der Interbau im Hansa-
viertel erstellt, ist eine Lösung in diesem Sinne ange-
strebt worden. Die üblichen kleinen, korridormäßigen
Balkone wurden hier zu einem Patio ausgestaltet, um
den sich ein Teil der Räume gruppiert. Diese Grup-
pierung der Zimmer um den Freiluftraum schafft ein
intimes Milieu und bietet wirtschaftliche Vorteile.

La maison de rapport, avec ses Iogements multiples,
ne saurait pretendre ä Ia meme intimite que Ia maison
familiale, qui est liee ä son entourage. Toutefois, celle-
ci, qui se trouve posee dans un jardinet, sans etre
agrementee par des cours interieures, a parfois des
inconvenients que n'a pas Ia maison locative. C'est
pourquoi on eherehe ä reunir les avantages de Ia
maison locative avec ceux de Ia maison individuelle.
Dans l'immeuble locatif edifie comme un modele du
genre ä l'exposition de l'lnterbau, dans le quartier de
Ia Hansa, unesolutionideale a ete realisee. Les etroits
balcons usuels ont ete elargis et forment un grand
espace autour duquel se groupent certaines pieces;
cela cree une atmosphere d'intimite, tout en apportant
des avantages pratiques.

The conventional apartment house is a sort of collec-
tive dwelling; it can never possess the same qualities
as, say, a private house, which has a direct relation to
the landscape. Nevertheless, the private house, which
is often placed as a box in a small garden without a
protected interior court, has its negative sides, while,
on the other hand, the apartment bleck can present
some positive advantages. Therefore an attempt
should be made to combine, in an ideal manner, the
specific advantages of an apartment block with the
merits of the individual house.
An ideal solution in this sense was sought in the
model apartment house which was built in the Hansa-
viertel on the occasion of the Interbau Exhibition. The
conventional small corridor-like balconies were here
transformed into patios around which the rooms of the
apartments were grouped. This grouping around the
open-air room created an intimate, private atmosphere.

Auf der Ostseite sind die Eingänge auf zwei verschie-
denen Niveaus. Die unteren münden zu den Fahrstüh-
len und zum Kinderwagen- und Fahrradraum sowie zu
den Kellern, die oberen führen zu der allen Einwohnern
gemeinsamen Säulenhalle, die auf der Westseite durch
eine Rampe zu den Kinderspielplätzen geöffnet ist.
A l'est, les entrees se trouvent a deux niveaux. Celles
d'en bas conduisent aux ascenseurs, aux depöts des
poussettes et des bicyclettes, et aux caves; celles d'en
haut aboutissent au vestibule, commun a tous les
locataires; ce vestibule s'ouvre a l'ouest sur Ies places
de jeux des enfants, ou l'on accede par une rampe.
On the east side the entrances are on two different
Ieveis. The lower ones Iead to the elevators as weil
as to the carriage and bicycle rooms and basement,
while the upper entrances Iead to the tenants' common
portico which is connected by a ramp on the west side
to the children's playground.
