Das cremeweiße Haus in einer schmalen Gasse von Lissabonns
Altstadt fügt sich unauffällig in seine Umgebung und ist erst auf
den zweiten Blick als Rekonstruktion zu erkennen. Hier stand
bislang ein zweigeschossiges Stadthaus, dessen marode Bau-
substanz nicht erhalten werden konnte. Auf der kleinen Parzelle
schafft der Neubau ein ungewöhnliches Raumgefüge als Woh-
nung für die Familie des Architekten.
Die Fassade übernimmt vom Vorgängerbau die Fensterein-
teilung, ein Gesims markiert die frühere Traufe. Darüber wurde
ein zusätzliches Geschoss errichtet. In der Schrägansicht fällt
zunächst nicht auf, dass sich in den reliefartigen Rahmen keine

This cream-coloured house in a narrow lane in the old city centre
of Lisbon fits inconspicuously into its surroundings. Only at sec-
ond glance would one recognize it as a reconstruction. Formerly
standing on this site was a two-storey town house, the dilapi-
dated fabric of which it was not possible to preserve, however.
On this small plot of land, the new structure creates an unusual
spatial complex – the dwelling of the architect and his family.
The window divisions of the previous house have been
adopted in the present facade, where a cornice marks the for-
mer eaves line. Above this level, a further storey has been
added. From an oblique angle, it is not immediately apparent

Glasfenster und auch keine Eingangstür, sondern verputzte
Wandflächen befinden. Das Haus zeigt sich zur Straße hin her-
metisch geschlossen, nur im 3. Obergeschoss öffnet es sich mit
einem großen Rundbogenfenster zur Straße. Auf der rückwärti-
gen Hofseite machen vier schmale Fenster des gleichen Typs
die Anzahl der Wohnebenen ablesbar, eine große Glastür führt
in den angrenzenden Hof.
Den Innenraum prägt ein vertikaler, sich nach oben keilför-
mig verjüngender Luftraum über die gesamte Höhe des Hauses.
Er entfaltet sich durch das Zurückstaffeln der Geschossdecken
von oben nach unten. Auf der knappen Grundfläche von nur
40 m2 entsteht so eine überraschende Großzügigkeit. Den obe-
ren Raumabschluss bildet ein konventionelles Satteldach, des-
sen First dem Straßenverlauf folgt.
Die Grundrisse differenzieren sich über die Lage der De-
ckenkante. Während der Wohnraum das gesamte Erdgeschoss
einnimmt, geben die drei oberen Ebenen zunächst keine spezifi-
sche Nutzung vor. Geschosshohe Glasscheiben stellen die
Sichtverbindung zum Luftraum und zum Erdgeschoss her. Als
zusätzliche Absturzsicherung ist den Scheiben raumseitig eine
Tischplatte aus weißem Marmor auf einem stählernen Unterge-
stell vorgesetzt. Die übrigen Materialien sind betont einfach in
Weiß und Grau gehalten und schaffen eine Atmosphäre von
abstrakter Klarheit, die durch das wenige Mobiliar, ein Bett, ein
Schreibtischstuhl, ein Holztisch, wohltuend gebrochen wird. BF

The street face of the house is thus almost hermetically closed.
Only on the third floor does it open on to the lane with a large
semicircular window. The number of habitable levels becomes
legible on the rear courtyard face from four narrow vertical
­windows of the same type. Here, too, a large glass door opens
on to the adjoining court.
Internally, the space is articulated by a vertically tapering
void extending over the entire height of the house. It was formed
by increasingly stepping back the floors from top to bottom. As
a result, a surprisingly generous sense of space has been cre-
ated on a limited footprint of only 40 m2. The spatial closure at
the top is in the form of a double-pitched roof, the ridge of which
­follows the line of the street.
The storey plans differ largely in the position of the floor
edges. While the living room takes up the entire ground floor
area, the three upper levels suggest no specific function. Storey-
height glazing to the edges of the floors creates visual links to
the void and to the ground floor. As an additional safety barrier,
white marble table-like strips on steel supports have been drawn
along the glazing across the rooms. The remaining materials, in
white and grey, have been kept deliberately simple and create
an atmosphere of abstract clarity that is agreeably interrupted by
the few furnishings – a bed, a desk chair, a wooden table. BF
