PLV 1a Verfügbarkeit zum Planstarttermin
Verfügbarkeit
Zweck

PLV 1a Availability on the planned starting date
availability
Purpose
The availability of the source materials on the planned starting date of a production order is an important factor
in ensuring delivery date and quantity reliability in production in the subject of examination.
This indicator is a possible alternative to measuring the availability of the source material and is designed for
production initiated by production orders with pre-specified starting date. This indicator is not suitable for kan-
ban production. A precondition is that it must be possible to specify fixed planned starting dates for the produc-
tion order. A fixed planned starting date is a date which is established once and can no longer be changed.
Description
The availability on the planned starting date is the percentage of production orders which could be started on
the planned date.
The no. of startable production orders refers to all production orders with a planned starting date in the obser-
vation period for which all of the required source materials were available on the planned starting date.
The no. of production orders is the number of all production orders with a planned starting date in the observa-
tion period.
Calculation rule
The no. of startable production orders are all production orders with a planned starting date in the observation
period to which the following applies:
Planned start (available items) = Planned start (required items)
The no. of production orders refers to all production orders with a planned starting date (planned start SCD) in
the observation period.

PLV 1b Einhaltung Mindestbestand Zugangsmaterial
Verfügbarkeit
Zweck

High
PLV 1b Compliance with minimum inventory of source material
availability
Purpose
The availability of the source materials is an important factor in ensuring the deadline and quantity reliability
of production in the subject of the examination.
This indicator for the measurement of the availability is suitable for production control principles where mate-
rial availability is assumed in principle (e.g. kanban or other pull principles). A precondition is the specification
of a minimum inventory of the individual source materials as well as a regular inspection of the inventory com-
pliance. Take note that the value of the indicator can be influenced by the individual specification of the mini-
mum inventory.
Description
The compliance with minimum inventory of source material is the percentage of the working calendar days on
which the warehouse inventory of all source materials was above the individual defined inventory limits.
The no. of days without falling below the inventory refers to all the working calendar days in the observation pe-
riod on which the warehouse inventory of all source materials has not fallen below the specified minimum in-
ventory.

Durchlaufzeit i
Zweck
Durchlaufzeit i = Produktionsauftragsende i (Datum BKT) – Min(Lagerausbuchung Produktion (Buchungs-
datum BKT))
Durchführungszeit i = Produktionsauftragsende i (Durchführungszeit)
Anzahl Produktionsaufträge sind alle Produktionsaufträge mit Produktionsauftragsende (Datum BKT) im Be-
trachtungszeitraum.

Purpose
The indicator mean execution time proportion is a measure for an efficient production sequence. The aim is to
maintain a reasonable utilisation of the production capacities while achieving a favourable ratio of the actual
throughput time of a production order to the execution time and thus avoid unnecessary idle times.
Description
The mean execution time proportion is the proportion of the minimum time required for the processing of a pro-
duction order as a percentage of the actual time required for the processing of an order.
The execution time is the time required for the processing of an order according to the work schedule. Transport
and organisation-related idle times are not included in the execution time. In non-overlapping production, i.e.
completion of the whole production order quantity on a single production system followed by transport of the
total production order volume to the next production system, the execution time is the sum of the tooling and
processing times of the individual work steps. In overlapping production with transport of part-quantities be-
tween the production systems, the execution time must be calculated taking into account the overlapping factors
usually set out in the work schedule.
The throughput time is the time in working calendar days which a production order actually requires from the
retrieval of the first material for the production order up to the report of the last work step. The throughput time
is composed of the transition times (transport times, idling before and after processing) and the execution times
(tooling times and processing times).
The number of production orders refers to all of the completed production orders of the subject of the exami-
nation within the observation period.
Calculation rule
The throughput time for a production order is calculated as follows:
Throughput timei = Production order endi (date SCD) – Min(Warehouse check-out in production (booking date
SCD)
Execution timei = Production order endi (execution time)
The number of production orders refers to all production orders with a production order end (date SCD) in the
observation period.
Note: As usually a number of source materials have to be retrieved from storage for a production order, the throughput time is calculated on
the basis of the first (earliest) warehouse retrieval. In some companies retrievals are not order-specific or the source material is only booked
out of the warehouse retrospectively after the order is completed. In this case the starting time can be calculated on the basis of an alternative
measurement point Order Start (e.g. by means of a BDE booking at the beginning of the first work step). If, however, there is a large time
differential between warehouse retrieval and order start, this falsifies the result of the indicator.

PLL 1a Liefertreue [–x BKT/+x BKT;–x %/+x %]
Lieferservice
Zweck
gemessen.

PLL 1a Delivery reliability[–x SCD/+x SCD;–x %/+x %]
delivery service
Purpose
This indicator is used for the measurement of the delivery service of the subject of the examination. The indi-
cator delivery reliability makes a statement in a highly aggregated form about the deadline, quantity and product
quality of the production orders of the subject of the examination. Only those products are taken into account
which are passed on to areas of the company outside of the subject of the examination.
Alongside the indicator compliance with warehouse bandwidth, this indicator offers a possible alternative for
the measurement of the delivery service. It is suitable for production initiated by production orders with speci-
fied end dates. For production control systems in which production takes place without any concrete production
order or without any fixed end date (kanban production, production for stock) the indicator compliance with
warehouse bandwidth must be used.
Description
The delivery reliability is the percentage of production orders delivered by the subject of examination in line
with the specified delivery date and quality.
The no. of production orders in compliance with the delivery objectives refers to all production orders for prod-
ucts of the subject of examination that are completed by the specified planned end date and with the planned
number of accepted parts (i.e. within the tolerance limits as applicable). For calculation purposes, the delivery
date is specified and measured to the exact day.
The no. of production orders refers to all of the production orders for products of the subject of examination
completed within the observation period.
Standard definition: The standard definition does not allow for any tolerance with respect to delivery date and
quantity compliance.
Optional, company-specific definition: The tolerance of the end date for the production orders is expressed
in an permissible positive and negative deviation in shop calendar days (SCD) from the target end date
(+x SCD and –x SCD). The tolerance of the accepted parts is expressed in a permissible positive and negative
percentage deviation from the agreed number of accepted parts (+x % and –x %).
Calculation rule
The no. of production orders in compliance with the delivery objectives refers to all production orders in the ob-
servation period with the article type ”E“ to which the following applies:
Warehouse check-out in production (target quantity) = Production order end (actual quantity)
and
Warehouse check-out in production (target end date SCD) = Production order end (date SCD)
The number of production orders refers to all production orders with the article type ”E“ and a Production order
end (date SCD) in the observation period.

PLL 1b Compliance with warehouse bandwidth
delivery service
Purpose
This indicator is used to measure the compliance with the delivery objectives of the subject of the examination.
The compliance with defined inventory limits is an important factor in ensuring the availability of material for
the subsequent areas.
Alongside the indicator delivery reliability, this indicator is a possible alternative for the measurement of the de-
livery service and is suitable for production control principles in which no fixed target end date is specified for
production orders but where warehouse inventories are constantly kept at a certain level by the subject of ex-
amination (e.g. kanban or other pull principles). Take note that the value of the indicator can be influenced by
the individual specification of the inventory limits.
Description
The compliance with warehouse bandwidth is the percentage of days on which the warehouse inventory of all
products passing through the subject of examination lay within the specified inventory limits.
The no. of days within the inventory limits is the number of days in the observation period on which the actual
warehouse inventory of the product was within the specified upper and lower limits.

The evaluated turnover rate of the total inventory is calculated from the quotient of the evaluated warehouse
exit and the sum of the mean incoming inventory and the mean circulating inventory.
The mean incoming inventory is the mean warehouse inventory of all articles which are source materials of the
subject of examination, evaluated at material costs.
The mean circulating inventory is the total inventory of semi-finished products in the observation period, eval-
uated at the incurred manufacturing costs. Semi-finished products are either in production or in intermediate
storage. If the respective manufacturing costs cannot be calculated, the mean value of material and manufac-
turing costs can be used as an alternative.
Exit subject of examination is the total material exit of the subject of examination with reference to one year,
evaluated at the incurred manufacturing costs. The material exit of the subject of examination refers to all arti-
cles which leave the subject of examination.
Others:
The mean incoming inventory and the mean circulating inventory are calculated on the basis of point-date ob-
servations, usually by the inventory and warehouse administration.
– 44 – VDI 4400 Blatt 2
Calculation rule
The Exit subject of examination is made up of warehouse exits where the materials will be used outside of the
subject of examination (see definition of source material in Section 2.1), and the completed production orders
which leave the subject of examination:
No. of shop calendar days per year
Exit subject of examination = (Warehouse exit + Production exit) · ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Observation period
The warehouse exit is calculated for all warehouse exits of article type ”Z“ for external use as follows:
n
Warehouse exit = ∑ Warehouse check-out in productioni (Exit quantity) · Manufacturing costs
i=1
n ≡ number of articles in warehouse check-out in production which fulfil the criterion article type = ”Z“ and
use = ”External“.
The production exit is made up of all production orders of article type ”E“ as follows:
n
Production exit = ∑ Order endi (Actual quantity) · Manufacturing costs

n
Purpose
The mean execution time is a measure for the production and assembly work required in the subject of exami-
nation. A large execution time leads to a long order throughput time and has a generally negative influence on
the execution time proportion.
Description
The execution time is the time required for the processing of an order according to the work schedule. Transport
and organisation-related idle times are not included in the execution time. In non-overlapping production, i.e.
completion of the whole production order quantity on a single production system followed by transport of the
total production order volume to the next production system, the execution time is the sum of the tooling and
processing times of the individual work steps. In overlapping production with transport of part-quantities be-
tween the production systems, the execution time must be calculated taking into account the overlapping factors
usually set out in the work schedule.
The number of production orders refers to all of the completed production orders of the subject of the exami-
nation within the observation period.
Calculation rule

Purpose
The indicator number of production system changes per production order provides information on the work re-
quired for manually executed transport processes in the course of production. An increasing number of produc-
tion system changes generally has a negative effect on the execution time proportion.
Description
Production system changes of production orderi is the number of production system changes for production or-
deri. A production system change is a manually executed transport process. If a number of production systems
are permanently and automatically linked to each other, these production systems can be regarded as a single
system. This means that there is no production system change between these production systems.
No. of production orders refers to all production orders of the subject of examination in the observation period.
Others:
The no. of production system changes is generally set out in the work schedule. Alternatively, the number of
production system changes can be calculated by manual estimation.
